This Week in Wesnoth - 01/13/12

Hello and welcome to This Week in Wesnoth; a shiny thing I just invented. I wish I'd thought of it Friday, but hey let's just pretend.

If I stick to this, I'll go over things that have happened each week in the Wesnoth community. Since this is my blog though, you'll mostly see things through my experience. It's like a dev-blog from the least important, most crazy developer.

You might see a side of the community you didn't expect. Spoiler alert!?

The week started out really well with the announcement of 1.10 release candidate 1. This means, if nothing major comes up, the next release will be Wesnoth 1.10.

Shadowmaster tweeted out an announcement, and told people to "don't tell anyone". So of course I immediately made @Wesnoth retweet it. This prompted him to cut my fingers off write a full blog post on the subject so there'd be no confusion about what a "release candidate" is.

Another big announcement was that unused forum accounts will be purged in February. Everyone needs to make sure they've either logged into the lobby with their account or verified their email address.

Things took a mildly sour turn when the User's Forum filled with whining about a few missing transitions. My rage over that can pretty much all be found in the thread. People who know me well around Wesnoth know how much I love the art team. If you donate time and talent to the project, I've got your back.

We also got reviewed by DIYGamer on Tuesday. Fortunately, it looks like they used 1.9.x for the review. It would suck for them to use 1.8 right before our big 1.10 release and then never revisit it. There's a problem with review sites and ever-evolving open source games like ours. We keep getting new things, but websites don't keep reviewing us. When their visitors come across our article, it's vastly out of date.

There wasn't much going on in the end of the week. I worked a lot on GambCiv. Mostly balance changes. I added "Stone Quarries" that are useful for getting Material on underground/cave maps where there aren't any tress. Winter also comes a lot suddenly now. It snows bit by bit over time.

I did a lot of WML work over the weekend and got some really exciting news today, but that's all technically this week. See you Friday!
